SPHERA: COMPANIES LACK WELL-DEFINED ROADMAP FOR SAFETY IMPROVEMENT MEASURES IMPLEMENTATION
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 29 (Bernama) -- While most companies have embraced safety as part of their corporate culture, there are still hurdles to overcome to improve their process safety and personal safety performance, Sphera’s new Safety Report reveals.
Sphera®, a leading global provider of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance and risk management software, data and consulting services, surveyed nearly 350 risk, process safety and health and safety professionals.
“An effective safety culture and efficient safety process helps ensure a healthy workforce and enhanced business performance. However, we are still seeing a gap in how companies link safety and business performance, which highlights a need for a more holistic approach through data, software and expertise,” said Sphera Chief Executive Officer and President Paul Marushka.
Results show that while 75 per cent of the respondents said safety was part of their organisation’s corporate culture, only 40 per cent said they had a well-defined safety performance roadmap in place, based on a statement.
According to Sphera’s Safety Report, creating a safety culture is just as important as being compliant, which has impacted the prioritisation of performance safety drivers.
Respondents indicated the top three key safety performance drivers are reducing operational and major accident hazard (MAH) risk exposure (60 per cent), regulatory compliance (48 per cent), and corporate and board priority (37 per cent).
Employer awareness of the safety hazards facing their workforce has been heightened during the pandemic. Over a quarter (27 per cent) of respondents indicated that the adoption of centralised Health and Safety processes was lagging.
For five years, Sphera produced the highly anticipated Process Safety Management/Operational Risk Management (PSM/ORM) report exploring industry trends in process safety and operational risk management.
However, with the 2021 report Sphera has expanded the overall safety landscape to include health and safety as well. While the occupational safety and health sector has especially felt pressure, companies across all sectors have had to make constant structural adjustments to keep workers safe.

Linking ports, bulk commodities, trading with indexes, provide ‘bellwether’ for industry development
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 -- At the 2021 ‘Belt and Road’ Land-sea Linkage Qingdao Summit held recently, the Global International Shipping Center Index - Northeast Asia Report (2021), Xinhua-Shandong Port Bulk Commodity Index and trade connectivity index report of RCEP member states (2021) were published.
Experts believe that through accurate depiction of the changes of port bulk commodity trade in the form of indexes and establishment of the efficient linkage among ports, bulk commodity and trade, the competitiveness of ports will be enhanced.
In addition, trade transformation and upgrading will be expedited, and the ability to stabilise the price and supply of bulk commodities will be strengthened, so as to provide a ‘bellwether’ for the development of the industry, according to a statement.
The ‘Global International Shipping Center Index’, established by China Economic Information Service with support of the Baltic Exchange, is another world-class port and shipping evaluation index launched globally, on the basis of the ‘Xinhua-Baltic International Shipping Center Development Index’.
The first phase of the index focused on Northeast Asia, and 17 ports in China, Japan, South Korea and Russia were selected as sample ports.
Meanwhile, Xinhua-Shandong Port Bulk Commodity Index was developed and established by Shandong Port Group Co Ltd in collaboration with China Economic Information Service.
It is an important move for the Port to probe into the possibility of taking the index as the starting point to enhance the ability of global resource allocation.
In the trade connectivity index report of RCEP member states (2021), a number of bilateral trade network relations were established in terms of trade exchanges, capital flows and key commodities to show the overall trade status and future evolution among RCEP member states, and reflect the development level of trade interoperability of RCEP member states.
The report also points out that major member states of RCEP are highly complementary in terms of industrial structure and have a close trade and investment relation in import and export, with a promising prospect for future cooperation.

RMIT UNIVERSITY-LED RESEARCHERS DEVELOP AI-POWERED GLAUCOMA SCREENING TEST WITH RAPID RESULTS
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 28 (Bernama) -- A new rapid screening test for glaucoma could help advance early detection of the disease, a leading cause of irreversible blindness.
Developed by a research team of engineers and ophthalmologists led by RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, the test uses infra-red sensors to monitor eye movement and can produce accurate results within seconds.
According to a statement, about 80 million people worldwide have glaucoma, with more than 111 million expected to be living with the disease by 2040.
Currently, glaucoma is diagnosed through a 30-minute eye pressure test delivered by an ophthalmologist. The new AI-powered test takes just 10 seconds to show if there is a risk of glaucoma, making it ideal for use in a national screening programme.
Lead researcher Professor Dinesh Kumar, RMIT, said early detection, diagnosis and treatment could help prevent blindness, so making screening faster and more accessible was critical.
“This research will allow a non-contact, easy-to-use and low-cost test that can perform routinely at general clinics. It could also promote a community-wide screening programme, reaching people who might not otherwise seek treatment until it's too late,” he added.
The pioneering technology differentiates between glaucoma and healthy eyes by analysing changes in pupil size. In the study, published in IEEE Access, pupils were measured 60 times per second using a low-cost commercial eye tracker.
Under ambient light conditions, patients looked at a computer screen while custom software measured and analysed specific changes in their pupil size. The software then compared the results against existing samples of glaucoma and healthy eyes to determine the risk of glaucoma.
The team is now looking to adapt the technology to work with smartphone cameras instead of the eye tracker used in the study. They are also looking for a commercial partner ahead of a clinical trial planned for 2022.
With further research, the software could also be extended to detect other neurological conditions.

NTHU-DAICEL TIE FIVE-YEAR JOINT PROJECT TO INTEGRATE INNOVATIVE MICROFLUIDIC SYSTEM
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 28 (Bernama) -- National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) and the well-known Japanese chemical company DAICEL, have announced a five-year joint project to integrate an innovative microfluidic system developed by scholar Kitamori Takehiko into the chemical manufacturing industry.
Total investment in the project is 450 million Japanese yen (approximately NT$110 million), and its potential to reduce energy consumption while lowering the production of carbon and waste is expected to set a new standard for sustainability in the chemical industry. (NT$100 = RM14.92)
Prof Kitamori, a world-renowned pioneer in microfluidic and nanofluidic technology and the former vice president of the University of Tokyo, has been serving as the Yushan Honorary Chair Professor of the Institute of Nanoengineering and Microsystems, Department of Power Mechanical Engineering at NTHU since 2020.
Kitamori explained it could be quite difficult to instantaneously mix several large barrels of chemicals with different temperatures and reaction speeds, and there might even be an explosion if the materials were not handled carefully.
Thus, the preferred way of blending chemicals is by passing it through a microchannel, which makes it possible to precisely control the amount of raw materials used, as well as the mixing sequence and conditions, thereby optimising the quality of the final product.
Kitamori said the aim of the project was to reduce the size of chemical production equipment, so that what was currently produced by a factory measuring 20 x 20 metres can be miniaturised into a system only two square metres in size.
What’s more, such a system would use less energy and materials, making it less expensive, and would also produce less carbon, according to a statement.
Years ago, when DAICEL president Ogawa Yoshimi heard about the microfluidic technology developed by Kitamori, he was deeply impressed, and is now highly pleased that DAICEL is going to integrate this innovative technology into its operations.
He is also looking forward to cooperating with NTHU in introducing this epoch-making manufacturing process to the world, which he also sees as a way of promoting sustainability and the circular economy.

INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT BUREAU, MINISTRY OF ECONOMIC AFFAIRS, TAIWAN: WITH ITS CAPABILITY TO INTEGRATE VARIOUS ITC TECHNOLOGIES, TAIWAN HAS BECOME A TRUSTED PARTNER IN THE SOUTHEAST ASIAN SUPPLY CHAIN FOR SMART METERS
With Its Capability to Integrate Various ITC Technologies, Taiwan Has Become a Trusted Partner in the Southeast Asian Supply Chain for Smart Meters
TAIPEI, Taiwan, Oct 26 (Bernama-BUSINESS WIRE) -- A smart meter system consists of a smart electricity meter, a communication system, and a meter information management system. By enabling two-way interactions between end-users and utilities through a cloud-based platform, it is the most important infrastructure component of a modern smart grid system. Supported by the Industrial Development Bureau, Ministry of Economic Affairs, Taiwan’s four leading smart meter manufacturers – Acbel Polytech, Arch Meter, Tatung Company, and DAS Technology – all have a comprehensive set of technical capabilities in system development and have secured international certifications for their products. Their expertise encompasses key components, system integration, and value-added applications.
This press release features multimedia. View the full release here: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20211019006290/en/
Taiwan possesses the capabilities to develop the core technologies of a smart meter system. These include IC design, network hardware, inspection equipment, and other key components. Among Taiwanese smart meter manufacturers, Arch Meter is a major developer for the key components deployed in a smart grid. The company focuses on power monitoring, advanced power management and integration of networking technologies. Its high-efficiency and automated solutions are adopted by utilities, manufacturers, enterprises, and homeowners. To further expand its presence in the high-end segment of the smart meter market, Arch Meter is developing premium products that combine AI-based power measurement with cutting-edge communication technologies. At the same time, it is forming R&D partnerships with other players to ensure successful market entry for its products.
Taiwan has established a complete system for the manufacturing, sales, and transportation of its products. It reaches almost every country of the major regions including North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Southeast Asia. Take Tatung Company for example. It collaborates with world-class companies such as Trilliant, Cyan, and Schneider with respect to smart grid solutions. After the acquisitions of several important certifications (e.g., JIS, TIS, and SIRIM), Tatung is now successfully marketing its products in Southeast Asia and Japan. Besides Tatung, DAS Technology is another Taiwanese smart meter manufacturer that maintains a solid reputation among international clients. For a long time, DAS has been a technological partner of ITRON, an American company and a global leader in automated meter reading systems. Thanks to this relationship, DAS has developed the capability to offer customized products that meet the specific needs of different countries.
Taiwanese smart manufacturers are also recognized for enhancing products with value-added applications. In the case of Acbel Polytech, it has been a specialist in power management technologies. With this foundation, the company is now proactively developing new solutions that connect smart meters with other applications such as EV charging and PLC. Likewise, DAS is searching for new ways to integrate advanced communication technologies into smart meters so that its hardware can serve under a general power management system, a home automation system, a 4G communication module, an IoT platform, etc. By leveraging IoT, smart meter manufacturers are going to create bigger opportunities for their products across different applications. Acbel is currently working to make its smart meters an essential element of the EV charging infrastructure. Meanwhile, DAS is extending the application scope of its products to the field of power management.
As smart meters are already deeply embedded in many countries’ grid systems, governments around the world have begun drawing up a list of qualified suppliers in this field in order to reduce the risks related to national and cyber security. Since Taiwan plays a crucial role in the supply chains for semiconductor chips and communication equipment, it can provide solutions that fully integrate smart meters with the necessary information security technologies. In sum, Taiwan can become a trusted partner in the global smart grid supply chain.
TechNews has released a new video introducing Taiwan’s smart meter industry on its YouTube channel. If you wish to contact related Taiwanese manufacturers to further discuss business opportunities, please email your inquiries to Ms. Kelly Chou at: kelly@itri.org.tw

JUMIO LAUNCHES END-TO-END ORCHESTRATION FOR ITS KYX PLATFORM TO DELIVER HOLISTIC VIEW OF CONSUMER IDENTITIES AND RISK
PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct 26 (Bernama-BUSINESS WIRE) -- Jumio, the leading provider of AI-powered end-to-end identity verification, eKYC and AML solutions, today announced the launch of an intuitive no-code orchestration layer for its KYX Platform that unifies an entire set of risk and fraud detection capabilities to address identity proofing, compliance verifications and AML use cases. Jumio pioneered the ID + selfie approach to identity verification and is now significantly expanding its platform capabilities for business customers. The KYX Platform will now provide multi-layered, end-to-end risk detection with flexible workflows, increasing visibility by showing a holistic view of the consumer identity and any underlying risk.
As fraudsters become increasingly sophisticated, businesses are having to layer in countless risk signals from multiple vendors in an attempt to protect their ecosystems. The Jumio KYX Platform addresses these pain points by enabling its customers to orchestrate the controls and assurances needed to know and trust their end users — all through a single API layer powered by AI and automation, achieving record high catch rates and low false positives.
“Jumio’s next-generation KYX orchestration platform reimagines the process from one-off authentication to holistic user recognition and verification,” said Jumio CEO Robert Prigge. “Rather than treating all users as potential threats, the platform puts the business customer at the center of the verification process. This delivers a more seamless user experience that verifies consumer or employee data coupled with enhanced authentication using a document such as a government-issued ID.”
With the addition of an orchestration layer, Jumio’s platform leverages its best-in-class identity verification technology to address today’s market challenges caused by the rampant theft of personally identifiable information (PII) via large-scale data breaches. Jumio’s ability to quickly verify and validate consumers, via government-issued IDs and other data sources and risk signals, completely differentiates the next-generation KYX Platform from other providers who rely on data that have been compromised in breaches. The engine behind the platform allows enterprises to create custom risk and fraud workflows using a no-code interface and presents a unified risk score to provide a single outcome across multiple risk checks.
“Our intent is to take the heavy lifting of fraud prevention out of the hands of our customers. By leveraging our KYX Platform, complete with flexible workflows, no-code orchestration and multi-layered risk signals, organizations can assess not only the risk of the individual, but also the devices associated with them, the IDs they furnish and their facial biometrics — all in one platform through a single API layer,” said Bala Kumar, chief product officer of Jumio. “We want to enable our customers to focus on their primary business and leave the fraud prevention to us. We are their first and strongest defense for bringing in valuable customers while keeping the bad actors out. Suspicious transactions will get pushed to our integrated case management solution so fraud and compliance analysts can quickly triage and resolve any issues.”
Latam fintech pioneer, Rappi, is one of the first Jumio customers to sign up for early access to the next-generation Jumio KYX Platform.
“We’re excited to work with a platform that gives us the flexibility to add data sources, maximize conversions and optimize the user workflow and overall customer experience,” said Juan Pablo Ortega, Rappi co-founder. “This vision aligns and supports our expansion ambitions and goals for the future.”

Joint venture company, SOL Energy starts Vietnam rooftop solar generation business
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 -- Sojitz Osaka Gas Energy Company Ltd (SOGEC), a joint venture company between Sojitz Corporation (Sojitz) and Osaka Gas Co Ltd (Osaka Gas), has partnered with Looop Inc (Looop) to establish a new joint venture company SOL Energy Company Limited (SOL Energy) as of Oct 21.
Moving forward, SOL Energy will begin operations of a rooftop solar power generation business geared towards industrial and commercial customers in Vietnam, according to a statement.
SOL Energy’s solar power business will utilise financial support from the Ministry of the Environment of Japan’s Financing Programme for JCM Model Projects in FY2021, and this project will be conducted in cooperation with the Vietnamese and Japanese governments.
SOL Energy plans to install rooftop solar panels that can provide over 10MW of solar power to customers at the Sojitz-operated Long Duc Industrial Park in southern Vietnam’s Dong Nai Province.
Installation of solar panels is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions for Long Duc Industrial Park as a whole by approximately 5,800 tonnes annually.
In addition to supplying customers with solar power over the long term, SOL Energy will use the surplus electricity to supply the industrial park’s operating companies.
In doing so, SOL Energy will contribute to utilisation of renewable energy and decarbonisation at the Long Duc Industrial Park. The company also plans to expand its solar business beyond Long Duc Industrial Park.
Sojitz, Daigas Group (an Osaka Gas group brand), SOGEC, and Looop will actively promote the spread of renewable energy through SOL Energy’s rooftop solar power generation business, thereby contributing to Vietnam’s sustainable development and the realisation of a low-carbon society.

ALR TECHNOLOGIES RELEASES SELECT RESULTS FROM MARKET RESEARCH ON DIABETIC PET INDUSTRY; MARKET DEMAND HIGH FOR INNOVATION
· GluCurve is the world’s first continuous glucose monitor (CGM) for diabetic dogs and cats
· 2017 AVMA Report shows between 28,000-32,000 veterinary practices in U.S.
· 97% of DVM survey respondents indicated they’d use a pet CGM system to diagnose and manage diabetic dogs and cats as soon as available
SINGAPORE, Oct 22 (Bernama-GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- ALR Technologies (“ALRT” or the “Company”) (OTCQB: ALRT), the diabetes management company, is pleased to release select results from comprehensive market research conducted by the consulting firm SmartPharma, evaluating the current approach to diabetes diagnosis, glucose monitoring and insulin treatment in cats and dogs. The conclusions speak strongly about the market demand for innovation to modernize the arcane standard of care today, which ALRT interprets as highly favorable for introducing the GluCurve™ Pet CGM (continuous glucose monitoring) as a simple, accurate, reliable and pain-free system to treat the approximately 4.5 million diabetic dogs and cats worldwide.
GluCurve™ is the world’s first and only CGM for cats and dogs. Once applied to the pet, it automatically collects blood glucose readings every 5 minutes for up to 14 days. Over the course of 24 hours, 288 data points are transmitted via Bluetooth to the pet owner’s synchronized device and then to the ALRT portal where the data is analyzed and presented to the veterinarian to quickly and effortlessly facilitate optimal care.
“The market research included veterinarians from across the United States and ranged from small private practices to large corporate clinics, and the responses were simply fantastic, as they validated our contention that GluCurve™ would fill a large void in animal health care,” commented Sidney Chan, Chairman and CEO of ALR Technologies. “We have developed a turnkey system that eliminates pain points across the complete spectrum of diabetic pet care by bringing cutting edge technology into the companion animal market, a development vets, pets and pet owners can all appreciate. We look forward to the commercial launch of GluCurve™ as the survey indicated that the veterinary clinics will be making orders from the outset.”
Background
SmartPharma was commissioned for, amongst other things, the purpose of gaining preliminary product concept for the GluCurve™ Pet CGM, including the evaluation of attribute tradeoffs that could increase or decrease utility and use, as well as determining expected uptake and ongoing use of a novel CGM product designed specifically for DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) use in cats and dogs.
Typically, for each pet diagnosed with diabetes, a DVM will perform a “glucose curve,” an unpleasant day-long process involving multiple blood draws that must be repeated throughout the year to determine a proper insulin dosing regimen. Due to the inevitable stress of the process on the pets, blood glucose data is often skewed, driving costs higher and creating challenges with accurate insulin prescriptions.
Leveraging leading technology developed by ALRT for monitoring and managing diabetes in humans, including all requisite hardware and software to consistently deliver accurate results, GluCurve is redefining the standard of care in diabetic companion animals by providing precise and effortless glucose readings while the pet is in the comfort of their home. The system is expected to come with the added benefit of being competitively priced below the average cost of in-clinic glucose curves or using a human CGM off-label.
Brian Zorn, Pharm.D., co-founder and managing partner, SmartPharma LLC commented, “In over a decade of conducting market research on new products with clinicians of all types, the veterinarian ratings on likelihood to use this product were among the highest we have ever seen.”

Digital transformation is key to contact centers providing the ultimate modern day customer service experience and how conversations are handled during the entire customer journey — pre, during and post interaction.
Top enhancements and benefits of Uniphore’s Conversational Automation platform include:
Industry’s Most Advanced Agent-Assist Solution
Uniphore’s advanced conversational AI for sentiment, intent and emotion analysis, together with Jacada’s workflow and desktop automation empower agents with the most comprehensive agent-assist solution, U-Assist.
With U-Assist, agents are guided in real-time during calls with next-best action based on customer intent, conversation content, sentiment and emotion. After the call, agents’ promises made during the call are registered and automation is used to ensure their fulfillment. Superior Business User Friendly UX
The integration of Jacada’s business user friendly UX that drives both self-service and agent- assisted interactions with Uniphore’s industry-leading CA platform bridges the gap between legacy systems of contact center process automation and modern-day automation powered by AI. This empowers business users to accelerate the rapid development and quick implementation of next-gen customer experience applications across self-service and agent-assisted interactions.
The intuitive and simple-to-use UX allows business users to use the same business logic and call flows to rapidly develop and implement self-service and agent-assisted applications.
Enhanced Self Service with Multimodal Capabilities
Uniphore’s U-Self Serve, a conversational self-service solution is enhanced with the addition of Jacada’s multimodal and visual IVR (Interactive Voice Response) capabilities. Attended and Unattended RPA
Availability of both attended and unattended RPA increases agent efficiencies with knowledge base integration during in-call with customers to improve accuracies and productivity. The availability of both attended and unattended RPA capabilities helps improve automation of agent interactions (both intelligent virtual agents and human agents) during the call as well as post call to help drive better customer and agent experience.
“I’m extremely proud of the work that the teams at Uniphore and Jacada have done to make the integration of the Jacada platform into ours smooth and seamless,” said Umesh Sachdev, CEO and Co-founder of Uniphore. “The power of the two platforms coming together, along with our future innovations in the conversational automation space will truly transform the customer experience in a range of industries, from sales and marketing, to education, HR, healthcare and beyond.”

CLOUDFLARE COLLABORATES WITH MICROSOFT AND MAJOR SEARCH ENGINES TO HELP IMPROVE WEBSITES' SEARCH RESULTS
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 20 (Bernama-BUSINESS WIRE) -- Cloudflare, Inc. (NYSE: NET), the security, performance, and reliability company helping to build a better Internet, announced it will work with Microsoft, Yandex, and other leading search engines to help businesses get the most timely and relevant search results to their customers. By participating in the IndexNow.org initiative, Cloudflare will allow websites to automatically notify search engines whenever content is created, updated, or deleted so they can be more efficiently crawled. Now, all Cloudflare customers can ensure users see the most up-to-date version of their content, all with a single click.
Search engines use a complex network of bots to crawl the ever-changing content on the Internet so people can find relevant, timely content. Today, approximately 45% of Internet traffic comes from web crawlers and bots. To help improve the efficiency of crawlers on the web, Cloudflare launched Crawler Hints–an easy way to signal to bot developers when content has been changed or added to a site, so they can make more efficient choices about what to crawl. What’s more, website owners will be able to improve site performance by reducing unnecessary bot traffic and to provide timely content, which ultimately helps improve search rankings. Now, Cloudflare is using the IndexNow standard to bring Crawler Hints to major search engines.
“A fast, reliable website and timely search results are at the heart of any growing business, whether it’s a startup or Fortune 500 company. Since the beginning, we’ve worked to help our customers to give them the speed, reliability, and security they need to do business,” said Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare. “Today, we're taking that one step further by working with Microsoft and other major search engines to help any website owner reduce inefficiencies while also delivering their users reliable, relevant and timely online experiences.”
Cloudflare’s global network spans more than 250 cities in over 100 countries and powers millions of Internet properties. Now any Cloudflare customer can opt into Crawler Hints–for free–with a single click in their dashboard to automatically begin sending hints to search engines when content has been changed on their site.
