JAPANESE BUDDHIST PEACEBUILDER URGES G7 LEADERS TO MOVE TOWARD "NO FIRST USE" OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS AT HIROSHIMA SUMMIT

TOKYO, Apr. 27, 2023/Kyodo JBN-AsiaNet/--

On April 27, 2023, Buddhist philosopher and peacebuilder Daisaku Ikeda, president of the Soka Gakkai International (SGI), issued a statement calling on the leaders of the G7 countries meeting in Hiroshima from May 19-21 to take bold steps toward resolving the conflict in Ukraine and guarantee the security of all humanity by taking the lead in discussions on pledges of No First Use of nuclear weapons.

Ikeda, an ardent proponent of nuclear weapons abolition since the 1960s, sees the G7 Summit in Hiroshima as a chance to build on the unwavering activism of the hibakusha -- survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear bombings -- and their determination that the tragic impacts of nuclear weapons never be experienced again.

He states: "As the G7 leaders revisit the actual consequences of a nuclear weapon detonation and the bitter lessons of the nuclear era, I urge that they initiate earnest deliberations on making pledges of No First Use so that their shared recognition of the inadmissible nature of nuclear weapons can find expression in changed policies."

He warns that with the taboo against the use of nuclear weapons being eroded among the nuclear-weapon states, and frameworks for managing and reducing nuclear arsenals verging on collapse, there has never been a greater need to establish policies of No First Use.

Regarding Ukraine, Ikeda urges that the Hiroshima Summit should provide a "prescription for hope" by working for an immediate cessation of attacks on civilian infrastructure and developing concrete plans for negotiations that will lead to a cessation of hostilities.

He stresses that representatives of civil society, such as physicians and educators who protect people's lives and futures, should join such negotiations as observers.

Ikeda references the work of the physicians from both sides of the Cold War who founded IPPNW (International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War) in the early 1980s and met in Hiroshima under the slogan: "Let us Live Together, Not Die Together." In the same spirit, he concludes with the vital need to shift to a "common security" paradigm for all humankind.

This is the third time in the past year that Ikeda, a veteran advocate for nuclear weapons abolition, has called for No First Use policies. He first pushed for declarations of No First Use in 1975, following visits to prominent leaders and thinkers in all five declared nuclear-weapon states.

DENMARK TOPS 2ND ANNUAL WORLD CITIZENSHIP REPORT, GLOBAL ‘POWERHOUSES’ LOSE LUSTRE

KUALA LUMPUR, April 25 (Bernama) -- Denmark, Switzerland and Finland took the top three spots in the 2023 World Citizenship Report, published by CS Global Partners, the world's leading government and investment migration advisory firm.

According to a statement, this year, Denmark scored the highest points, knocking Switzerland out of the top spot. Switzerland came in second and Finland retained the third spot for a second year in a row.

Notably, global superpowers such as the United States and China did not rank in the top 10, symbolising a significant shift in what these economic giants can tangibly offer the global elite.

High-net-worth-individuals (HNWIs) and mass affluent citizens are searching for a better quality of life, security and financial freedoms, all aspects which have been on shaky ground since the pandemic.

The surveyed cohort chose ‘Quality of Life’ as the most important feature of citizenship, which ranked first across the World Citizenship Index’s five pillars, eclipsing both Physical Safety and Financial Freedom.

The report found that a competitive economy, public services, and environmental sustainability are the three areas mass affluent individuals feel most let down by their governments.

“This year, we looked beyond HNWIs and extended our survey to the new mass affluent, a globally mobile generation who is providing fresh impetus for a renewed drive towards global citizenship.

“As the world continues to change at an exponential rate, bringing with it new crises and opportunities, individuals across the globe are increasingly calling their own citizenships into question in terms of the safety, freedoms and the prosperity they provide,” said CS Global Partners Chief Executive Officer, Micha Emmett.

The World Citizenship Report ranks 188 countries across five key motivators defining citizenship for the global citizen showcasing the World Citizenship Index (WCI), an innovative tool that takes a holistic approach to rank the world’s citizenships across multiple dimensions including the motivators of Safety and Security, Quality of Life, Economic Opportunity, Global Mobility and Financial Freedom.

Unlike other rating tools, the WCI ranking is designed to reflect a citizenship’s value through the lens of HNWIs and the newest generation of global citizens: the mass affluent population.

The WCI’s unique methodology relies on the experience gained through CS Global Partners unparalleled work in the citizenship solutions industry, as well as comprehensive research to evaluate 188 jurisdictions across the five motivators of citizenship out of a maximum attainable score of 100 points.

GENETICISTS UNVEIL MAIDEN WHOLE GENOME SEQUENCING TEST IN EMBRYOS AT PARIS CONFERENCE

KUALA LUMPUR, April 19 (Bernama) -- Dr Santiago Munné, a pioneer in preimplantation genetic diagnosis, presented the first whole genome sequencing test in embryos before delegates at the 20th Conference of the Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis International Society (PGDIS), held in Paris.

In his plenary address attended by over 300 experts, Dr Munné, an internationally recognised trailblazer in reproductive genetics, presented validation data for GenomeScreen, the test developed by the research team he leads at the biotechnology firm GenEmbryomics.

GenomeScreen is a revolutionary new whole genome sequencing test for In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) embryos that has been described as "the most complete genetic test in IVF" by authorities at the PGDIS forum.

The test provides highly precise information on the genome sequence of the embryo and the genetic parents, offering families key preimplantation insights on embryo health and reproductive prognosis that can inform their decisions.

Furthermore, this information will be invaluable to individuals born from IVF, as it will provide input on nutrigenomics or guidance on which medicines are most genetically suited to the patient.

“When we first started our research on embryo sequencing, our goal was to create a powerful, comprehensive tool that could equip fertility physicians with exhaustive data for precision screening.

“Now that we have this tool and use it with 99 per cent reliability, we are aware that this diagnosis not only provides information, but also substantially enhances the success of reproductive medicine,” said GenEmbryomics founder, Dr Nick Murphy in a statement.

Dr Munné, whose career as a leader in reproductive genetics spans over 20 years, has made enormous contributions to embryo selection and IVF treatment. With this test, he and his team of researchers solidify the role of genetic testing within reproductive medicine, increasing treatment success.

Founded by Dr Murphy in 2019, GenEmbryomics is a cutting-edge biotech company specialising in the genomic analysis of embryos to determine the most viable candidates for IVF implantation.

The gaming industry has undergone a paradigm shift since the introduction of the pay-to-play model in the 1970s and the subsequent free-to-play model in the 2000s. Currently, there are four distinct ways to monetise games: Subscription Services, Rewarded Ads, Play & Earn and PCG.

“This shift highlights that publishers are embracing new and innovative models, while players are expecting new and inventive forms of interaction with their favourite games,” says Newzoo Head of Consulting, Tony Habschmidt.

According to a statement, PCG represents a novel competitive experience for everyday gamers, offering them myriad of opportunities to compete in low to high stakes skill-based games against other players worldwide, beyond traditional games.

Real money prize pools allow players to monetise their gaming abilities, and effective skill-matching ensures a fair and competitive playing field for all participants.

Mobile is gaming’s biggest, fastest-growing segment, by player numbers and revenues. In 2021, the industry saw 2.8 billion mobile gamers contributing over 50 per cent of the global gaming revenue and is forecasted to grow to US$113.0 billion by 2024 with 3.1 billion players.

PC gaming had 1.4 billion players in 2021, expected to rise to 1.5 billion by 2024, and console gaming had 871 million players in 2021, projected to increase to 943 million in 2024.

The report also revealed that the United States (US), India, Mexico, the United Kingdom and Germany are forecast to be the top markets for PCG with the US, currently the largest gaming market in the world, is also leading the way in PCG, with an estimated value of US$3 billion in 2021.

A collaborative effort between Mobile Premier League (MPL), mobile eSports and digital gaming platform and Newzoo, leader in video game and gamer data, the report is based on a consulting analysis by Newzoo and a customised research conducted by the company in 2022 on 24,562 respondents across 12 of the largest gaming markets.

HONG KONG’S TUGU INSURANCE CREDIT RATINGS AFFIRMED - AM BEST

KUALA LUMPUR, April 14 (Bernama) -- Global credit rating agency, AM Best has affirmed the Financial Strength Rating of B+ (Good) and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating of “bbb-” (Good) of Hong Kong’s Tugu Insurance Company Limited (TIC).

In a statement, AM Best said the outlook of these Credit Ratings (rating) is stable, reflecting TIC’s balance sheet strength, which AM Best assessed as strong, as well as its marginal operating performance, limited business profile and marginal enterprise risk management (ERM).

TIC’s strong balance sheet assessment is supported by its risk-adjusted capitalisation assessed at the strongest level, as measured by Best’s Capital Adequacy Ratio.

The company’s capital and surplus has been volatile over the past five years, due to the combined effect of unsteady operating results and revaluation gains or losses arising from its concentrated investment properties.

AM Best viewed TIC’s operating performance as marginal in which the company has reported solid premium growth since 2021; nonetheless, it continued to record an elevated level of expense ratio due to its small premium base.

The company’s investment return has been relatively stable, supported by a stream of rental income from its investment properties, coupled with dividends from listed bonds and common shares, as well as interest income from cash and deposits.

Annual revaluation of investment properties, on the other hand, adds uncertainty to TIC’s net profits or losses, with AM Best expecting TIC’s overall profitability to remain thin over the short to medium term.

United States-headquartered AM Best assessed TIC’s business profile as limited. The company remains a small player in Hong Kong’s highly competitive and fragmented general insurance market.

The rating agency also viewed TIC’s ERM as marginal with underwriting, strategic planning and reserving activities have historically been areas in which the company’s risk management capabilities do not match its profile.

RECURRING PAYMENTS EXCEED US$15.4 TRILLION IN 2027 - JUNIPER RESEARCH

KUALA LUMPUR, April 11 (Bernama) -- The transaction value of recurring payments will exceed US$15.4 trillion globally in 2027, from US$13.2 trillion in 2023, according to a new study from Juniper Research. (US$1=RM4.41)

This relatively slow growth of 17 per cent reflects that recurring payments are a well-established market, but also disguises a rapid change of payment methods in the space, with Open Banking and digital wallet payments outstripping overall growth.

As merchants struggle to keep their prices as low as possible, offering payment methods with lower processing costs is of critical importance and is driving change, as it is growing consumer enthusiasm for digital payment methods.

As part of the study, Juniper Research released its latest Competitor Leaderboard for 2023 which is underpinned by a robust scoring methodology, ranking the top 20 recurring payment platforms, using criteria such as the completeness of their solutions and their future business prospects.

Juniper Research in a statement said the top three vendors for 2023 are Mollie, Zuora and Recurly.

The research found that the leading players scored well based on their breadth of integrations with different payment options and their tracking and customisable payment plan capabilities.

To stay ahead of the competition, recurring payment platform vendors must develop solutions that support future-looking payment types as they are developed, such as Open Banking and Central Bank Digital Currencies, in order to stay relevant in the fast-moving consumer payments space.

CertiK Analyzes ZenGo’s Secure Wallet To Uncover a Privileged User Vulnerability

ZenGo Rapidly Patches Wallet Security Issue After In-Depth Evaluation From CertiK

New York, NY, April 11 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- CertiK, the leading blockchain security solutions provider, announces a successful collaboration with the ZenGo Wallet, the popular self-custodial MPC wallet provider, to fortify the security of its wallet application against privileged user attacks. The joint effort demonstrates CertiK's commitment to conducting proactive in-house research and collaborating with external parties to raise the standard of security and transparency across the Web3 world.

CertiK's SkyFall team conducted a comprehensive evaluation of ZenGo's security design and implementation, focusing on the wallet's ability to protect against advanced threats, such as advanced malware and rooted devices. Despite ZenGo's robust security features, including its two-party signature scheme, TEE-based device protection, and biometric-enforced user sign-up and recovery, CertiK identified an inappropriate protected cryptographic management API issue that could be exploited in certain scenarios.

ZenGo responded quickly to CertiK's findings, deploying a patch to fix the identified issue. CertiK's thorough review of the patch confirmed its effectiveness, significantly bolstering the wallet's security against privileged user attacks and rendering it more secure than traditional wallets which are still vulnerable to this type of attack. This collaboration demonstrates the importance of proactive security evaluations and the value of working with experienced security firms like CertiK to identify and address potential vulnerabilities.

“I’m proud of the work our engineers did to identify and address this security issue in one of the most secure mobile wallets,” said Kang Li, CertiK’s Chief Security Officer. “Even the MPC technology provides a strong defense, the specific implementation details can expose security risks if not designed well. This collaboration with ZenGo highlights the need for comprehensive security evaluations and reinforces CertiK’s commitment to raising the industry standard of security and transparency.”

“It was a pleasure to work closely with the CertiK team in a clear, professional, and proactive manner to quickly fix this issue and jointly publish a report to increase community awareness. CertiK's discovery and ZenGo's fix helped ensure that ZenGo is hardened against privileged attacks that traditional wallets cannot protect against,” said Tal Be'ery, ZenGo's CTO and co-founder.

This partnership between CertiK and ZenGo showcases the shared commitment of both companies to create a more secure and transparent ecosystem for the rapidly expanding Web3 world. Builders, founders, and users can take confidence in the knowledge that CertiK's comprehensive security suite and proactive research are raising the bar for security standards across the entire industry.
